What Child is This? A worship series for the season of Christmas based on the epistle lessons.

During the season of Christmas, we are asking the question that so many before us have asked, sung, and wondered. “What Child is This?” Let’s come together and ponder this question. Who is this baby lying in the manager? Is he really able to change things in my life? Is he really the answer to all of this world’s doubts, fears, and guilt? Does he have the power to help me? To forgive me? Does this child actually want to bless me and take care of me? The resounding answer is, “Yes!” Come and join us as we open God’s Word and ask, “What Child is This?”

What Child is this?

Christmas Eve. The Child who changes everything

Christmas Day. The Child who created and sustains the universe

Christmas 1. The Child who makes us his children

Christmas 2. The Child who pours out spiritual blessings

Titus 2:11-14 Christmas Eve. The Child who changes everything

The Christ child is the embodiment of the grace of God that brings salvation to all people! This grace, this child, changes everything. He is our great God and Savior who redeemed us and made us pure. He even changed our hearts to make us willing and eager to do what is good.

Hebrews 1:1-9 Christmas Day. The Child who created and sustains the universe

What child is this? He looks so weak and insignificant lying in the manger. He is more than meets the eye! The writer to the Hebrews reminds us that this child is God himself. The very one through whom God created the entire universe.  The one who sustains all things by his powerful word. Listen to him as he grows and learns to speak. There is power lying in the manger!

Galatians 4:4-7 Christmas 1. The Child who makes us his children

On Christmas morning we saw that this Child was true God, creator and sustainer of all things.  For our salvation, he also needed to be true man. It was the humans who had sinned against God. The humans were put under God’s law and expected to carry it out perfectly. So God became man in this child. “When the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law.” Ahh but that’s not all! The God-man did all of this so that we would be his own. His children. His heirs.

Ephesians 1:3-14 Christmas 2. The Child who pours out spiritual blessings

What child is this? Look at how Paul describes him! Look at what he has done for us! God has blessed us with unbelievable spiritual blessings through Christ. It’s personal. God has included you, yes you, in Christ, as a recipient of his grace, through the gospel. God’s blessings are yours through this Child!
